Gimbal Bearing Removal - Method A

If the bearing is scrap and is being replaced, place the end of a long 1/2 socket extension against the inner race of the old bearing, exactly as shown, and start driving the bearing inward.

If the bearing is being removed to fill it with grease, then pry it side ways, don't beat on it.

Keep driving the old bearing inward.

When the bearing is in this position, you can remove it with your fingers.

Gimbal Bearing Installation - Method A

Please note ! The outside diameter of our # 0795 replacement gimbal bearing ( shown below )
is 2.834 inches outside diameter. Same as a Link Belt bearing.

Also - if your old bearing says "Made In China", our # 0795 will not fit your old ring.

Older boats which used a large snap ring to hold the bearing assembly in place, had a much larger bearing ( 3 1/4 inches in diameter which is no longer available). You will have to remove the old bearing and snap ring. You can now pull out the plastic ring which held it in place and drive in
our # 2100 Gimbal Bearing and Ring Assembly. The large snap ring is no longer required.

15 Inch Long Snap Ring Pliers

Place the new ( 2.834 O.D. ) bearing inside of the ring with the small grease hole in
the bearing positioned as shown. This hole must go into the ring so
it will face the front of the boat. As you can see, there is a grease
grove in the bottom of the ring it will fit into for grease.

If the boat is before 1973 and does not have a grease fitting outside the boat, you should load the bearing with grease before installing it with our grease packing tool.

Place the same 1/2 socket extension inside the new bearing and pry the
bearing back to its original position.
DO NOT BEAT ON THE NEW BEARING, JUST PRY IT.
When you get it as far as you can with the extension, you can now
switch to an engine alignment tool to turn it back to center.

THIS BEARING MUST NOW BE LINED UP TO THE ENGINE
WITH AN ENGINE ALIGNMENT TOOL OR THE OUTDRIVE WILL NOT GO ON.
