MerCruiser Pinion Bearing Tool Kit
MerCruiser sells this as a complete kit p/n 91-31229A5 which lists for $273.60 but we sell
the tool separately. Why buy the complete kit if you are only working on one of
the drives.
This tool is used to remove and install
the pinion bearing located in the bottom of the lower unit.
To remove the
old bearing :
Never use a screw driver to try beating the bearing cage out of the lower unit
without the roller bearings installed because you will bust the bottom out of
the cage. If the rollers fell out, put some grease on the rollers and stick them
back into the bearing cage. Thread the appropriate size bushing/driver onto the
end of the threaded rod with the head of the driver facing upwards and drive the
old bearing out using the rollers.
To install a
new bearing:
Turn the bushing over and place the larger spacer over the bushing and then
the new bearing with the numbers facing upwards. By using the larger spacer, you will now
be pulling up on the outside of the bearing and not on the rollers.
